Elections chair asks to be dismissed from federal lawsuit

Athens County Board of Elections Chairman Dave Ratliff requested to be dismissed from a federal lawsuit concerning prisoner-voting rights.

Ratliff is a named defendant in a lawsuit, filed on Oct. 15, which asserts that people jailed soon before an election are having their constitutional right to vote, albeit absentee, denied.

Secretary of State Jon Husted, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and election officials from other counties were also named as defendants in the lawsuit.

“Our argument was that it was a better action against the secretary of state and not the Board of Elections and its chair,” Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn said.

Blackburn said he will be serving as Ratliff's attorney.
