Atkins added to spring concert lineup

Country superstar Rodney Atkins will take the back roads to Athens for a newly announced concert at the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium on March 28.

Atkins, with opening act Josh Thompson, is the third addition to the Campus Involvement Center’s Spring

Concert Series.

“It should be a big (concert) for us,” said Andrew Holzaepfel, associate director of the Performing Arts and Concert Series.

Earlier this week The Post reported that the Spring Convo Concert would not be held this year after two consecutive years of large national acts coming through, including B.o.B and Wiz Khalifa.

“We are piecing it all together,” Holzaepfel said. “The challenge is finding enough time in the auditorium.”

The Campus Involvement Center hopes that the four acts — Colbie Caillat, Phillip Phillips, Easton Corbin and now Atkins — will make up for the elimination of the Spring Convo Concert and provide for a more diverse set of artists.

Atkins newest hits, “Take a Back Road” and “He’s Mine,” are taking over country radio and his album Take a Back Road peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard country charts.

The song “Farmer’s Daughter” tells a story of Atkins working manual labor on a farm, wanting to quit until he catches a glimpse of the farmer’s daughter. The No. 1 hit has a playful hook that seems to resonate with country fans everywhere.

His first three albums have garnered the artist six No. 1 hits, solidifying his spot in the country music scene.

In his online bio, Thompson said he feels country music is real life set to music. He enjoys the storytelling aspect of country and it comes out in his songs.

Tickets for the concert will go on sale Jan. 18 and 22 for students and Jan. 23 to the public at a price of $35 for the first 10 rows and $25 for the remainder.
