Cost of R-Tech fire may top $100,000

Arson has cost Ohio University almost $20,000 and by the time all repairs are completed, the crime could amount to more than $100,000.

OU paid $18,830 last December to Tri-State Roofing and Sheet Metal to make temporary repairs to the roof of the Research and Technology Center after a fire burnt a wooden shed and much of the roof the morning of Nov. 30, according to records obtained by The Post.

“The permanent damage will be in the $100,000 range (to repair the roof),” said Harry Wyatt, associate vice president of Facilities.

Temporary repairs were conducted the day after the fire to beat a forecasted rainstorm to avoid damage to the building, said Mike Gebeke, executive director of facilities management.

The building remained open after the fire and classes were not affected, Wyatt said.

The fire was a result of the wooden shed catching fire when a janitor discarded his cigarette on the roof, according to Wyatt and a previous Post article.
