Former mayor of Jacksonville faces prison sentence, pleads guilty to theft in office, grand theft

Former mayor of Jacksonville, Ohio was sentenced to five years probation after pleading guilty on Jan. 18 to stealing village funds.

George Pallo, 56, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft in office and two counts of grand theft as part of a plea agreement with the Athens County Prosecutor’s Office.

Athens County Court of Common Pleas Judge Michael Ward accepted the plea agreement and sentenced Pallo to five years of community release control Tuesday.

Pallo pleaded guilty to taking village money and deposited it in the Jacksonville Fire Fund 501(C)3 and used some of the money for personal use, Prosecutor Keller Blackburn said in the release. He added Pallo opened an unauthorized credit card in the village’s name to purchase a lawn mower and lied to other officials about the use of the card.

The village of Jacksonville owes more than $5,000 for the lawnmower and Pallo’s total theft is estimated at more than $19,000, according to the release.

As part of the agreement, Pallo will have to pay $19,785 in restitution to Jacksonville within two years and is banned from holding public office again.

If Pallo violates the terms of the agreement, Ward could sentence him to 18 months in prison.

Pallo could have been sentenced to a maximum of six years in prison and a maximum fine of $20,000 if convicted of all charges at a trial, according to the Ohio Revised Code.
