Funk band visits Athens

Columbus band MoJoFlo will perform their first show of the new year in Athens, bringing with them new songs and a renewed attitude.

MoJoFlo will kick off their upcoming tour at Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery, 24 W. Union St., and end in New Orleans for Mardi Gras.

“This will be our third time touring down (to New Orleans) for Mardi Gras,” said Jake Levy, drummer and emcee for the band. “(New Orleans) is a huge funk and soul city and that’s the roots of what we play.”

The funk band was recently named Columbus Underground’s Favorite Local Band of 2012 and has been booked for shows in larger venues in the East Coast and Midwest region.

“Yeah we’re coming, we’ve been going at it for about five years now,” said Amber Knicole, lead singer for the band. “Columbus has always been very supportive of us … we have been getting more shout-outs in more places.”

The group is currently working on releasing a digital copy of their newest single, which is still untitled. Knicole said the crew has been working on the song for a long time and is excited to give fans a good recording.

Levey said the band will release a series of YouTube videos in the coming months, promoting the tour with new material recorded in their home studio.

However, a new album may be a ways off. The newest edition is currently in the early stages of production as the band stays focused on promoting their upcoming tour, Knicole said.

The newest member, bassist Matt Urminski, joined the group about six months ago after the disbandment of Athens-based band Elemental Groove Theory. He said he was a big fan long before becoming acquainted with its members.

“I’ve always felt this group was very well-established, even when I was just a fan,” said Urminski. “I always felt the group had an air of professionalism about them and I’m glad to be a part of it.”
