Grad senate talks General Fee, writing programs, condoms

Graduate Student Senate was greeted by an array of resolutions and program announcements Monday night.

However, the meeting exposed the frustration of some senators as many first learned of the $800,000 from Ohio University’s General Fee that is now being allocated for student use.

Talinn Phillips of the Graduate Student Writing Center spoke to the senators about a new writing program, which focuses on assisting with longer, more specialized papers for graduates and undergraduates. The program hopes to have tutors from each college available to students. Communication and hard science tutors are in the highest demand, and those who are interested should contact Dr. Phillips.

College of Health Sciences and Professions Senator Natasha Aduloju-Ajijola spoke next, explaining the upcoming Candies and Condoms program. Students will be handing out condoms, candies and health information outside of Baker University Center during the week of Valentine’s Day.

“(It will) raise awareness about condom usage and sexual health,” Aduloju-Ajijola said.

The LGBT Center is hosting the first annual Queer and Transgender Plenary Symposium on April 19, and LGBT Affairs Senator Lance Poston asked the GSS for funds. The symposium will be opened to the public and will provide an opportunity for graduate students to present research.

The next GradFest is set to take place on Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. at Jackie O’s Pub and Brewery. The third Saturday of each month will be dedicated to the graduate festivities, as well.

Five resolutions were passed Monday night. The resolutions included an amendment in the Graduate Student Bylaw, which addresses the change in quarters to semesters a $291 and $280 of the $2912.22 budget allocation to the Candies and Condoms and Queer and Transgender Plenary Symposium respectively and the appointment of one member and a new senator.
