OU student organizations to come together for candlelight vigil

Three Ohio University student organizations are coming together tonight for a candle light vigil after Wednesday’s attack near the University of Aleppo, in Syria, which reportedly killed more than 80 people and injured more than 150 people.

The candlelight vigil will be 9 p.m. Thursday in the grassy area on top of Morton Hill, and is being held by STAND Against Genocide, Project Nur and the Muslim Student Association.

Jack Spicer, co-president of STAND Against Genocide and a junior studying political science and law said he would “absolutely encourage students to attend.”

“Anybody is welcome to come we just would like to deepen the level of awareness for those who choose to come tonight,” Spicer said.

According to the Facebook event page of the vigil, about 75 people will attend, including Kevin Gross, a senior studying biological science.

“My hope is that people will see us and stop by and ask questions and see what is going on,” he said.

Lydia Weiant a freshman studying anthropology said she was planning on attending the vigil as well.

“I’m very involved in human rights activism and Syria has been a very prominent source of debate and a lot of talk within the human rights organizations,” Weiant said. “With everything going on there (in Syria,) it relates to us as students. This is where it truly hits home.”
