Report of smoke just hot air

A report of smoke Friday afternoon turned out to be nothing more than steam and mirrors.

At 3:15 p.m., the Athens Fire Department received a report of "heavy smoke" in MemAud.

Shortly afterwards, a firefighter at the scene said the source of the smoke seemed to be in the building's attic.

By 3:45 p.m., however, it became clear the smoke was actually steam emitting from a radiator leak, according to AFD Lt. Bob Rymer.

"The appearance of smoke ... was (actually) from steam," Lt. Rymer said.

At most, there might be "minute" water damage to the builing from the leak, he said.

By 3:59, fire engines had returned to their stations.
