Schuneman Symposium kicks off Monday

The Schuneman Symposium on New Media and Photojournalism is kicking off Monday night with a presentation from a nationally renowned journalist.

Gwen Ifill, moderator and managing editor for “Washington Week,” will start the fifth annual symposium in the Baker Center Ballroom at 7:30 p.m. Monday, followed by five other presenting journalists on Tuesday.

The symposium is sponsered by the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism through support from R. Smith and Patricia Schuneman, both Ohio University graduates, according to the school’s website.

Following Ifill’s presentation on “why journalism is not dead,” Abrahm Lustgarten, an investigative reporter for ProPublica, will discuss the myths behind fracking at 9 a.m. on Tuesday in the Baker Center Theater.

Keith W. Jenkins, the supervising senior producer for multimedia at National Public Radio, will follow Lustgarten at 10:30 a.m. in the Baker Theater by discussing the audio and visual identity of journalism.

Moving into photojournalism, Michel duCille, an OU alumnus, and associate editor for photography for The Washington Post, will examine how photojournalists have had to change their practices to embrace changes in digital media at 1:30 p.m., also in the Baker Theater.

The final presentation will come from a duo of multimedia journalists at 3:05 p.m. in the Baker Theater. Kainaz Amaria, a member of NPR’s multimedia team, and Meghan Louttit, an OU alumna, and multimedia producer for The New York Times, will give a presentation entitled “grasping for excellence on the front lines.”

Their presentation will be followed by a roundtable discussion featuring Lustgarten, Jenkins, and duCille, as well as Amaria and Louttit.

"What we hope conferees take away from this symposium is a deeper understanding of the future of mass communication in these revolutionary times of change," said R. Smith Schuneman, in a statement.
