Sib's Weekend kicks off with speakers and dancing

February is a month of recognitions, including African Americans past and present, the awareness of HIV/AIDS and our loving, and sometimes-pesky siblings.

As part of Black History Month and HIV Awareness Day, the Black Student Culture Programing Board and Multicultural Center are bringing keynote speaker, David Robertson, to the stage to discuss his experiences with HIV.

“My main purpose is to give hope, awaken and inspire my generation and generations to inspire,” he said.

Robertson will also be discussing his experiences in college with peer pressure, depression and other emotions he battled. He said the audience can expect an out-of-the-box performance that is extremely honest and truthful, as well as artistic and hopeful.

BSCPB is also kicking off the celebration of sib’s weekend with the annual Variety Show in the Baker University Center Ballroom. The event will consist of several acts in which students dance and lip-sync to different songs in hope of winning the first prize of $200 or the second place prize of $100.

Ronnie Pope, treasurer of BSCP and a senior, said portions of the proceeds are divided among the program fund and towards the Blackburn/Spencer Scholarship that is given each year.

Kent Harris, special event assistant to BSCPB and a sophomore, is looking forward to a big turn out of the variety show.

“I’m most looking forward to people coming with their siblings,” Harris said. “The turn out last weekend was really nice and I hope it comes out as well as last year or better”

BSCPB will also be hosting many events in honor of Black History Month including National Black Love Day Game Show on Feb.,13 and KKK Infiltrator Daryl Davis on Feb. 21.
