Student Senate to discuss emergency contact system, new poster campaign

A number of suicides in recent years and a threat that closed campus have compelled Student Senate President Zach George to introduce a resolution to his body calling for a uniform emergency contact system at Ohio University.

Wednesday’s meeting in Walter Hall 235 will start at 7:15 p.m., featuring presentations gearing Senate up for Athens Beautification Day and using Valentine’s Day to draw attention to ‘This Is What A Feminist Looks Like,’ along with the emergency notification resolution and another reinstating an old senator.

University administrators need a universal way of communicating with students they can count on, George said, adding it is important for distraught parents to be able to get in touch with their children through OU if they cannot reach them directly.

OU does not currently require students to provide the university with emergency contact information, including a current cell phone number, university address, parental contact and email address — information George wants students to have to give OU.

Off-Campus Life Commissioner Mel Ruberg will be updating Senate on where the body stands concerning Athens Beautification Day being held on Sunday, April 14.

Women’s Affairs Commissioner Emma Wright and College of Arts and Sciences Senator Emily Burns will outline their poster campaign: ‘This Is What A Feminist Looks Like.”

“The idea behind it is to raise awareness and support for women's issues and feminist ideals by featuring pictures of many different and diverse people from around campus,” Burns said, in an email.

Jared Henderson, a senior and the former Academic Affairs commissioner, who resigned at the end of last semester will be reinstated as a member of Senate with a new title — Honors Tutorial College Senator.
