Ongoing wars over natural resources and a proactive approach to tackle environmental dilemmas will be the topics of focus in Stocker Center Thursday.
Chuck Overby, an Ohio University emeritus engineering professor, plans to discuss the importance of sustainability and resource consumption in a presentation titled “Some Reflections on Pioneering in Engineering and Public Policy, and Green Technology by Design Including Co-Generation at Ohio University in 1982.”
“The lecture will focus on connecting the relationship between green technology and public policy,” Overby said. “If we can use more green technology, then we can stop fighting for resources and possibly fight to end global warming.”
Green technology is a term used for technology that can be used to monitor human consumption of natural resources and for conservation as well as sustainability.
Overby encourages anyone to attend the lecture, adding that it is not necessary to be familiar with engineering terminology in order to grasp the concept of green technology and environmental conflict such as wasting natural resources and wars fought over them.
Ken Edwards, owner of the LMNO Engineering Research and Software, Ltd. and friend of Overby, said the discussion could be beneficial to Athens residents.
“Athens is a community that is aware of doing green activities such as recycling,” Edwards said. “I imagine this will include conversations on greenhouse gases, sustainability and also fossil fuels. I plan on attending the event.”
The lecture will cover sustainability and human efforts of preserving natural resources with a wider scope on the global impact of green technology; however environmental initiatives have a significant place on OU’s campus.
“It’s an important conversation to have,” said Jenny Hall-Jones, interim dean of students. “There’s a lot of interest in (sustainability) here in Athens.”
Hall-Jones said that OU has strived to become more environmentally aware through campus programs and policies.
“We have a sustainability plan, we have a recycling plan and we are a leader in recycling on college campuses nationally,” she said. “We have a strong presence in sustainability.”
