GSS discusses text alert system, Graduate Research Series

Low attendance and a light agenda led to a quiet evening for Graduate Student Senate at Monday’s meeting.

Only 24 of the seats in Room 111 of Scripps Hall were filled, representing just over half of the 40 members in GSS.

The main discussion focused on Vice President Ed Gaither’s meeting with Ryan Lombardi, vice president for Student Affairs, two weeks ago regarding the emergency text messaging system.

“(Lombardi) was not really aware of some of the issues that we discussed (last meeting), as in what do you do if you are a T.A. and an emergency comes up,” Gaither said. “What I would like to see is T.A. and instructor training as to what to do in these situations.”

Senate President Tynita White encouraged members to attend the first presentation in the Graduate Research Series, which will discuss Bianca Sams’ process of examining the lives of little known civil rights activists.

“The main purpose of the Graduate Research Series is (to share) how they did their research,” White said.

The series is hosted by GSS in partnership with Alden Library and allows students to share their research process, White said.

Members were reminded to submit election materials to the graduate office in the Research and Technology Center by Friday.

No resolutions were passed.
