Local union, OU avoid strike

A strike has been averted at Ohio University after a local union chapter and the university agreed to a new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The announcement came just hours before members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1699 planned to go on strike at 5:01 p.m. on Friday, March 1, according to an OU news release.

The union represents over 500 service and skilled trade employees on OU’s Athens Campus.

“We are glad that an agreement has been reached and are looking forward to the continued contributions of our AFSCME member employees,” said Linda Lonsinger, associate vice president for Human Resources. “They are an important part of the success of this University.”

The new agreement lasts through March 1, 2016 and included a wage increase of 2 percent this year, increased insurance contributions from employees, language changes to implement Responsibility Centered Management and a strategy to change employee benefits due to the Affordable Care Act.
