Professor's film next in local theater's Science on Screen series

Almost a year after it first screened in Athens during last year’s Athens International Film and Video Festival, School of Film professor Annie Howell’s film Small, Beautifully Moving Parts is returning for a second time to the Athena Cinema’s screens.

For its third Science on Screen event, the Athena Cinema, in association with Arts for Ohio, will showcase the film March 21 at 7 p.m.

“The screening on Thursday night at the Athena will likely be very similar to a festival screening: a welcoming audience who knows a bit about the film already,” Howell said. “Usually festival audiences are film-lovers and are ready to embrace a movie. They are expecting to have a good time because the film has been vetted by the fest. So I hope that's the case on Thursday.”

In addition to the film, there will also be a discussion with Howell, along with a presentation by Mary Wright Steenson, a digital media expert and professor of journalism at the University of Wisconsin, to discuss the film’s use of technology and how it builds connections.

“What I’m most excited about the conversation is seeing how people connect with the film and what they are able to relate to in its messages and use of technology,” Steenson said. “I’m hoping there will be a good back-and-forth, and that the conversation highlights the loveliness of the film, as well as letting people discuss some of the issues that are addressed in the film. Hopefully, this will create a better appreciation of the film for those in attendance.”

Part of the requirements in having the Science on Screen event is showing at least one film that won the Sloan Feature Film Prize. Looking at the list, the Athena Cinema management noticed that Howell’s movie, which is also co-written and co-directed by Lisa Robinson, was one of the choices, and management felt this was the perfect opportunity to have the filmmaker speak about her film on campus.

“We felt this situation added an exciting dynamic for the series and the film,” said Alexandra Kamody, managing director of the Athena Cinema. “Since Howell was here on campus, we knew this would be a great opportunity to show her film, and thankfully, she agreed to come speak about her movie.”
