Ohio University’s Division of Student Affairs will now be adding a new face to its department at the end of the school year.
Martha Compton has been selected as the new director of Community Standards and Student Responsibility and will begin her position on May 28, said Jenny Hall-Jones, interim dean of students.
Vice President for Student Affairs Ryan Lombardi said that he and Hall-Jones had consulted with each other prior to selecting Compton but ultimately Hall-Jones made the decision to hire Compton.
“In addition to the great experience she brings to the position, I am excited about her focus on educational conduct,” Lombardi said. “She is very student centered and views the conduct process not as a punitive process, but rather an educational one, which fits with our goals here at OU.”
The position remained vacant since October 2012 by former Director of Community Standards and Student Responsibility Chris Harris, said Lombardi.
Harris’ 2012-13 salary was $64,818. Compton's salary will be $65,000.
“I applied for the position because it was professionally, a great next step for me,” Compton said. “I hope to find ways to expand on the good work that CSSR is already doing while keeping the process focused on student development.”
Compton has 15 years of experience with Student Affairs. Prior to OU, she held the position of Resident Director at Appalachian State University during graduate school. She also served as the assistant director in the Office of Student Conduct at North Carolina State University for more than six years. She worked at the University of Texas at Austin, first as an assistant director and then as the associate director for Student Judicial Services.
Having visited Athens twice, Compton said she is excited about starting her job at OU and working along with Students Defending Students, a subsidy of Student Senate that works to defend students in the university judiciaries.
“I really want to spend some time understanding how students view the conduct process and their interactions with CSSR and I am very much looking forward to making my home in such a beautiful part of the country,” Compton said. “I am excited to return to a campus and community that embodies the more traditional college town setting.”
