Beloved French classic returns to Athena Cinema for Moms Weekend

Nominated for five Oscars and considered one of the 1,000 best movies ever made according to the New York Times, Amélie has gone on to become a modern-day classic.

On Mom’s Weekend, the Athena Cinema, 20 S. Court St., will be allowing audience members the chance to enjoy it, as they will begin screening the film beginning April 5.

“We thought this film would be a great choice for mom's weekend for several reasons,” said Alexandra Kamody, managing director of the Athena Cinema. “(It) is beloved by all who see it. It is also a perfect fit for the Athena, being a quintessential art house classic, full of whimsy and romance.”

Much like their screenings of Animal House and the Hitchcock films, the Athena is hoping to allow a wider audience to the theater, and hopes to gain an audience that they might not have had previously.

“We thought it would be a great chance for OU mothers and daughters to be transported to Paris for a fairy-tale romance on the big screen,” Kamody said.

Amélie, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, tells the story of a young and innocent French girl who, with her own sense of justice, decides to help those around her and in her travels, and begins to find love.

“We hope that OU students and their moms walk away from the film feeling touched by Amélie’s unique kindness and in an uplifted, cheerful mood to celebrate the weekend,” Kamody said.

“A sugar rush of a movie,” and filled with “a placement of imagery that covers every square centimeter of the screen,” in a “meticulous clutter,” according to the New York Times Guide, the Athena Cinema hopes that this movie will captivate the hearts and imaginations of moms and children alike while they visit Athens.

“I hope after watching the movie, both the mom and the child would appreciate each other's distinct personality and therefore have a great time for the rest of the weekend,” Hsin-ning Chang, head projectionist, said.
