'College Green Magazine' hosts screening of 'Trashed'

A free documentary screening Thursday at the Athena Cinema aims to bring local discussion to the worldwide issue of waste.

College Green Magazine is hosting a screening of Trashed, a documentary about waste starring Jeremy Irons. Following the screening, a panel of city and university affiliates will discuss waste issues at the local level, said Neal Patten, editor of Lifestyles and People for College Green Magazine.

“Trash is a problem created and fueled by every person in the U.S. and the world because we all consume and we all dispose of waste,” Patten said. “The universality of this environmental topic compared to others is what attracted the interest of College Green.”

Written and directed by Candida Brady, Trashed takes the viewer to the world’s most beautiful places that are polluted by sites of rubbish, waste and trash buildup in an effort to show the tail end of consumptive societies, according to the film’s website.

“The goal with showing Trashed at the Athena Cinema is to attract a more diverse mix of students and Athens residents,” Patten said. “Because waste is everyone's problem, we really hope to attract an ‘everyone’ audience.”

In previous years, College Green Magazine hosted film screenings on campus.

Patten added that the neutral location, convenient time and free admission will hopefully attract a large and diverse crowd.

The panel will feature Roger Bail, operations coordinator for the Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District, Kyle O’Keefe, head of Rural Action’s Zero-Waste Initiative, Andrew Ladd, recycling and refuse manager for OU, Geoff Buckley, professor in the department of geography and Michele Morrone, associate professor of environmental health science.

“We hope the film will demonstrate that by changing the way we live our lives, we can contribute to our own survival and well-being and ultimately that of the planet,” said Irons on the film’s website.

The screening is funded by uFUND through Student Senate. The film starts at 7 p.m. and runs about an hour and a half with the discussion panel to follow. The event is free and refreshments will be available.
