MDIA 419 students ready films for premiere

After a year of dedication and hard work, MDIA 4719 students will be premiering their finished films Saturday night.

“They are extraordinarily talented people,” said Frederick Lewis, associate professor in the School of Media Arts and Studies and adviser for MDIA 4719. “It’s pretty impressive that these students could endure through this process and pull together some pretty impressive pieces of work.”

MDIA 4719, commonly known as MDIA 419, is an advanced narrative production class in the School of Media Arts and Studies. In its 13th year, this year will mark a milestone in the annual series, as it will be the first year that two separate projects were produced completely or largely out of the state in the same year.

The short films in the screening will include Asleep in the Deep, a movie filmed in Nashville during spring break and based on the short story by Arthur P. Davis, and  Monhegan Light, based on the short story by Richard Russo, filmed on Monhegan Island in Maine.

“Having gone there and filmed the movie, I think the reason it had to be filmed in Nashville is for the talent,” said Chelsea Kardos, producer of Asleep in the Dark and a junior studying video production. “Luckily, our entire principle cast had either worked together before (or) knew each other prior to our project and this helped with building chemistry on screen.”

Additionally, the short films Julie in the Funhouse, based on the short story by Jincy Willet, filmed on the outskirts of Athens, and Home For Hari Raya, based on the short story by Robert Raymer and the first international production effort by the MDIA students, will also be screened.

“Time, money and effort may make something good, but people, passion and persistence makes things great,” said Joe Battaglia, a senior studying video production and director of Monhegan Light.
