Almost 1,000 issues of The Post were stolen from several prominent spots on Ohio University’s campus Wednesday morning.
Before noon, the issues of The Post were taken from newsstands in or near Baker University Center, Alden Library, Bentley Hall and Scott Quadrangle, according to an Ohio University Police Department report.
The Post has a total daily circulation of 10,000.
About 500,000 student newspapers have been stolen nationwide in the last 15 years, said Adam Goldstein, attorney advocate for the Student Press Law Center.
The Student Press Law Center receives between 12 and 24 reports of newspaper theft each year, Goldstein said, adding there are a variety of reasons for such larceny.
“At times, (the reasoning) is grounded in innocence and stupidity,” Goldstein said.
“Two-thirds of the time, though, it is rooted in malevolent stupidity, because people didn’t like how they or their friends were portrayed in the newspaper.”
Those accused of theft typically face sanctions from a college’s interdisciplinary commission or criminal prosecution.
The case is currently under investigation.
