CAREY

OU alumnus named chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents

Gov. John Kasich has named an Ohio University alumnus chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents.

John Carey, former Ohio State Representative, will replace Jim Petro, 64, who retired in February. Carey graduated from OU in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

Carey’s appointment is effective April 29 and is subject to the advice and consent of the Ohio Senate, according to a news release.

"As Chancellor, Carey will work with businesses to ensure that coursework and curricula give students the skills they need to meet the needs of employers," Kasich said in a news release. "The reforms we've made to date have led to greater collaboration among the universities, an increased emphasis on research commercialization, and a funding plan that focuses on improving graduation rates. As a result, universities can better control their costs and help more Ohioans get their degrees so they are better prepared for the jobs that exist. John Carey is a thoughtful, devoted public servant who focused on job creation throughout his legislative career, and I am excited to see him inject this job creation mentality into the Ohio Board of Regents."

OU President Roderick McDavis said in a statement that he looks forward to working with Carey to strengthen Ohio’s public higher education systems in the coming years.

“Chancellor Carey has been a key mover in Ohio’s higher education and K-12 education reform movements,” said McDavis. "... His extensive public service, his bold approach to tackling issues of importance in the Ohio legislature and his commitment to educational access for students in Appalachian Ohio has earned his alma mater’s highest esteem.”

Stephanie Davidson, vice chancellor of academic affairs at the Board of Regents, has served as interim chancellor since February.
