Tech administrator may head south for higher position

The top tech administrator at Ohio University might soon be gone.

Brice Bible, OU’s chief information officer, has been listed as a finalist for position of vice chancellor for information technology and CIO at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Bible is one of three finalists for the position and spoke at a forum at the university on April 19 to discuss how he would use technology at an urban research university.

“By reaching out to the surrounding areas, we improve ourselves as a university,” he said during the forum.

Both OU’s Office of the President and Provost were not aware of Bible’s search for another position.

“At this point, we have not been made aware of Brice Bible’s candidacy and, therefore, have no formal comment to offer,” said Jennifer Kirksey, chief of staff to OU President Roderick McDavis, in an email.

Ann Fidler, chief of staff for the provost and chief financial officer, echoed Kirksey.

“At this point, I have no information about Mr. Bible leaving OU,” she said in an email. “I have no statement to offer about Mr. Bible being named a finalist other than to say that we wish him well, as the UNC Charlotte job is a wonderful opportunity.”

In 2011, Bible applied for the position of vice president for Information Technology and chief information officer position at Florida International University. However, another finalist of six, Robert Grillo, was hired.

Bible has been OU’s CIO since March 15, 2007. His salary in 2007 started at $210,000 after replacing William Sams, who made $137,596 in 2007. Bible currently makes $228,929.

“He was approached by UNC and was asked to throw his name in,” OIT Communications Manager Sean O’Malley said. “He wasn’t actively looking. When they did that, he said he thought, ‘Well, this job would be a promotion, because it is a vice chancellor position,’ which is higher than what it is at OU. It would also bring him closer to his family in Tennessee.”

Bible could not be reached for comment. He was in Arlington, Va., at the 2013 Internet2 Annual Meeting on Monday.

UNC Charlotte’s previous CIO, Jay Dominick, accepted a job in August 2012 as vice president for information technology and CIO at Princeton University. His 2011–12 salary at UNC Charlotte was $190,000.

Currently, Michael G. Cato is serving UNC Charlotte as interim vice chancellor and CIO. His salary is $165,253, according to The Charlotte Observer.

UNC Charlotte’s Jay Raja, senior associate provost and chair of the search committee, said he could not comment as the search is still in process. He also did not comment on when the search will conclude.
