Voting in VOICE

Dozens of students wearing orange passed out popsicles and campaigned on Thursday to make students hear their VOICE’s loud and clear.

On Thursday night at 10:05 p.m., that work paid off.

Nick Southall, Anna Morton and Austin LaForest — running for president, vice-president and treasurer, respectively — on the VOICE ticket beat their F.U.S.S. competitors after the three-week campaign season.

“I’ve never been so happy before. I put in a lot of hard work into this as well as my ticket and I’m extremely excited to be leader of this organization next year," Southall said. "I’ve never felt so incredible in my life.”

A total of 2,313 students voted in this year's campaign.

VOICE won all positions except the senator for the Honors Tutorial College, which went to Allie Dyer.

F.U.S.S. — which stands for Fighting to Uphold Student Solidarity — will continue to advocate for students despite losing the top spots in Senate.

"We called into question senate. They did a number of suspected unscrupulous things that are going to be called into question about senate next year," Farmer said. "The status quo is going to be maintained but students aren’t going to stand for that."

Jacob Chaffin, F.U.S.S.’s vice-presidential candidate, and Rebekah Rittenberg, F.U.S.S.’s candidate for treasurer, have also stated they will continue to advocate for students.

Southall beat Farmer by 562 votes while Morton beat Chaffin by 483 votes. LaForest beat Rittenberg by 593 votes.

Southall received 1342 votes, Morton received 1305 and LaForest received 1347.

F.U.S.S. ran as an executive-only ticket while VOICE ran a full ticket of candidates for uncontested positions excluding write-in and independent candidates.

"It's a bit surreal i cant believe i was standing here just a year ago doing the same thing," said Zach George, senate's outgoing president. "I wish them nothing but the best ... I have no doubt that it will be an outstanding student senate this coming year."
