For local police authorities, the end of the school year marks the beginning of a much quieter period.
“There has been some activity,” Ohio University Police Chief Andrew Powers said, “but our call volume drops during the summertime. We do have things going on, but it’s mostly officer-initiated like traffic stops. It’s not nearly as much volume as we have during the school year.”
With no significant changes in staffing or scheduling, Athens Police Department Chief Tom Pyle said there isn’t a big change in the types of crimes being dealt with, just a noticeable decrease in maintenance type crime such as noise complaints and fighting.
Because the switch to semesters has caused classes to end in April, there has been an increase in requested vacations during the month from the department’s staff.
Police activity will begin to pick up again once more people arrive on campus for summer session and summer camps start, Powers said.
“I don’t recall anything particularly remarkable (this past week),” Powers said. “There have been theft reports and caller-initiated reports, but just not at the level previously seen.”
