OUPD this week: One of the calmest of the year, Powers says

Besides working security for commencement on Saturday, Ohio University Police officers have enjoyed one of their slowest periods of the year this past week.

Graduation resulted in a weekend that was busier than usual for OUPD, but once students left Athens, the department’s call volume dropped off significantly, said Chief Andrew Powers.

“It was a slightly busy weekend with graduation,” Powers said.

The time between commencement and the beginning of summer school sessions is historically one of the calmest periods for law enforcement in Athens, Powers said.

“Our call volume is certainly a lot less during this time. There are no students technically because it is between sessions and (faculty) are on vacations,” Powers said. “If you were to look at our activity levels, this week, Christmas week or Thanksgiving week…are our slower times.”

As students return to Athens in the coming weeks, though, Powers said he expects police activity to pick back up.
