University breaks ground for new housing without all details set in stone

When students return to Ohio University’s campus in the fall, they might notice the beginning of what has the potential to be a multimillion dollar construction project.

Phase one of the project began this summer and will cost between $95 million and $105 million. It will take an estimated six years to complete, said Christine Sheets, vice president of Facilities and Capital Planning in a previous Post article.

But the project’s phase two and phase three costs will not be determined until the first phase is completed in 2019.

University officials have previously cited fluctuating construction expenses as reasons for waiting to determine a comprehensive cost.

“Phase one of the Housing Development Plan is going well,” said Peter Trentacoste, executive director of OU Residential Housing. “Work has begun for parking replacement, utilities and site preparation.”

Fencing and gravel surround Adams Hall and Ping Center near South Green to prepare for utility work and stage the contractors’ work site, Trentacoste said.

The Office of Residential Housing held a forum for students who are enrolled in summer sessions to get feedback on what features they’d like to see in the new dorms.

“This furniture selection is being reviewed for future use in all renovations and new construction of our residence halls,” Trentacoste said.

Furniture under consideration includes new beds, desks, and desk chairs. Older furniture from the soon-to-be-demolished residence halls will be sold through the department’s surplus auctions or reused in another residence hall, Trentacoste said.
