A bank robbery headlined the most recent month, spanning Brew Week and The Fourth of July.
Emmanuel Arocho, 31, of Albany, Ohio, had a friend bring him to the Athens Police Department early on the morning of July 13 to turn himself in for the July 8 robbery of the People’s Bank on East State Street, according to a previous Post article.
Though it is uncommon for the department to deal with robberies, Athens Police Captain Ralph Harvey said it isn’t out of the ordinary for someone to turn themselves in for a crime of that scale.
The robbery occurred right after a time span in which Athens hosted numerous events for Brew Week and July 4 when many would be visiting town, yet police said it was a down period for activity.
"I don't think it was terribly busy for us at all,” Ohio University Police Chief Andrew Powers said. “Lately it's been mostly officer-initiated stuff like traffic stops.”
There were 15 crimes reported on campus during the first week of July, according to the OUPD crime log. Of those, nine were traffic-related.
Continuing with the theme of little activity, Athens Police Chief Tom Pyle said Brew Week didn’t present the problems that a fest during the school year would.
“It has a different attendance in my mind,” Pyle said. “I guess the people that attend the events are older professionals, although some are still college kids. We just don’t seem to have any problems with that event at all. In fact, none really.”
