The Plains Lions Club presents a Fabulous Fourth

The Plains Lions Club will be throwing its fifth annual Fabulous Fourth event July 3 and 4, which will include its first ever Senior Citizens Pageant.

Tuesday, pageant participants will vote on a king and queen from a pool of strictly 55-and-older contestants inside the Athens Community Center.

“We did a regular king and queen pageant last year,” said Clyde Baker, secretary of The Lions Club.  “But the older people looked bored and we wanted to give them something to do this year.”

The pageant is something that Tami Blake, president of the club, said she is most looking forward to.

“I’m most excited about the seniors’ pageant this year,” Blake said. “But there’s still a lot more going on than just that one event.”

Other Fabulous Fourth events include the annual parade, a car show, fireworks, games for kids and a free pool party at Athens City Pool.

Fireworks will be set off from East State Street on Wednesday at 10 p.m., and the Independence Day parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

“We like to try smaller and newer events every year, some of which we’ve had marginal success with,” said Baker. “But the parade and the fireworks are things that everyone likes to come out to, which makes me glad we do them.”

Blake said that the event is something that can bring the community together despite normally busy schedules.

“The whole atmosphere around the Fabulous Fourth is great,” said Blake, “It’s like a family reunion – everyone comes out and you get to see people you normally wouldn’t get to see.”
