Football: Drug charges sideline players

Ohio football players Larenzo Fisher, a junior cornerback, and Greg Windham, a redshirt freshman quarterback, pleaded not guilty to drug-trafficking charges  Wednesday.

Fisher, 21, of Washington D.C., was arrested on a warrant charging him with four counts of trafficking in drugs. Each count is a fourth-degree felony.

Windham, 20, of Tampa, Fla., was also arrested on a warrant charging him with one count of aggravated trafficking in drugs.

Both players allegedly sold MDMA, commonly known as molly. The alleged transactions took place during April and May.

The warrants resulted from ongoing, joint drug investigations by university and Athens police and Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn’s office.

Both players pleaded not guilty to the charges before Common Pleas Judge George P. McCarthy on Wednesday, according to a news release from Blackburn’s office.

Windham’s jury trial is scheduled to begin Nov. 2; Fisher’s will begin Nov. 5.

The prison sentence for a fourth-degree felony can range from six to 18 months, according to the Ohio Revised Code.

Fisher appeared in every game for the Bobcats last season and made 11 starts. He finished the year with 50 tackles. Windham redshirted last year and was entering his first season of varsity eligibility.

Both players are currently on scholarship.

A statement from Ohio Athletics acknowledged the duo had been arrested and suspended indefinitely for violating team policies. Fisher had already been ruled out for the team’s season opener by coach Frank Solich for disciplinary reasons.

“They’re suspended indefinitely and we’ll wait to see the outcome and go from there,” Solich said.
