The Nelsonville-York and Trimble football rivalry extends all the back to the early 1970’s.
While Nelsonville-York has taken more than half of the 47 head-to-head match ups, it’s a safe bet that each team will put everything on the line throughout four quarters of play in their season opening meeting on Saturday.
The schools, which are separated by less than 10 miles, will yet again battle it out on Saturday at Trimble High School for conference points and more importantly, local bragging rights.
“We look forward to playing them. It’s going to be a good game no matter how young they are,” said Phil Faires, coach of the Trimble Tomcats. “They got some good talent.”
Trimble has several key players that could make an impact on Saturday night.
“We have quite a few guys to watch for, but it all starts with our quarterback, Konner Standley,” Faires said. “Jacob Koons will be the one back, and when we go to the I-formation, he’ll be our fullback. We have Austin Downs at receiver, and there are quite a few lineman back.”
“Defensively, we have Koons at inside linebacker and Jacob Stevens at defensive line. Those are two pretty good defensively players.”
With a whole cast of returning starters, Coach Faires has high expectations for the season ahead.
“We did well last year, and we didn’t lose very many guys. We lost a couple of defense and a couple on offense, and we have nine starters back both ways. We have a kicker, punter, and long snapper all back, so special teams should be ahead of what it was a season ago,” Faires explained.
“If we can start off where we finished last year and keep improving, we’ll be great.”
Trimble and Nelsonville-York will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Glouster Stadium. The Post will be on hand for updates from the conference rilvary game.
