Possible plea bargain for alleged Courtside stabber

A plea bargain could be on the table for a former Ohio University student who allegedly stabbed another student with a broken bottle in February.

Patrick Michael Barry, 21, was indicted for felonious assault, a felony of the second degree, on April 22. He was incarcerated with a bond set at $10,000 and has been ordered by the court to avoid contact with the victim, Michael Gallas, according to court documents.

Athens Police Department and Athens County Emergency Medical Services responded to the non-fatal incident at Courtside Pizza and Sports Bar and sent Gallas to O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, according to a previous Post article. He was later transported to Grant Medical Center in Columbus.

The two students supposedly knew each other from feuding fraternities — Barry was a member of Sigma Pi and Gallas is a member of Pi Alpha Kappa, according to a previous Post article.

The article also stated that the Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn’s office is not aware of any “fraternity war.”

Barry was later identified and arrested by a witness who recognized him; however, he pleaded not guilty at his arraignment.

However, his court files list a change of plea hearing set on Oct. 15, vacating his final pretrial, which was scheduled for Thursday.

Until then, Barry will be considered as a participant in a diversion program after he submitted a waiver of time to the court on Aug. 23 asking to be allowed into the program, according to court documents.

According to the Ohio Revised Code, Barry could face up to eight years in prison if he is found guilty.
