Alleged Athens bank robber sent back to jail after heroin use

An Albany man, who turned himself in for robbing a bank in Athens this summer, was sent back to jail Tuesday after drug use.

Emmanuel Arocho, 31, turned himself in to the Athens Police Department after robbing a People’s Bank, 801 E. State St. in Athens, on July 8. He was sent to jail Tuesday after being treated for heroin use at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, which was a violation of his bond, according to court documents.

However, records do not specify where he is incarcerated.

Arocho is to be present for his pretrial Monday and jury trial Oct. 15.

Athens Police Officer Robert Filar confirmed that Arocho was the man from the bank’s surveillance camera and that police believe he acted alone in the robbery, according to a previous Post article.

James Wallace, Arocho’s court-appointed attorney, told Athens County Court of Commons Pleas Judge L. Alan Goldsberry that Arocho, a combat veteran, arranged to get into a treatment program offered by Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Chillicothe; the first available space does not open up until Wednesday.

Because of the opening, Wallace filed a request this past Thursday asking that Arocho be released on his own recognizance, according to court documents.

Regardless of his enrollment in the treatment program, Arocho must attend his pretrial Monday at 1 p.m., according to court documents.
