Alumni funds provide new webcam, look at campus life

Next time you’re walking on College Green, smile! You’re on camera.

Ohio University’s new webcam allows anyone to go online and watch a real-time stream of College Green anytime and anywhere.

The OU Alumni Association decided to fund the camera and its installation after asking for alumni feedback — all of which was positive.

“Alumni just love the campus. It’s one of the primary reasons they come back and stay engaged (with OU),” said Jennifer Neubauer, assistant vice president of alumni relations.

The camera was installed in June and cost $788.30 — money provided by the OU Alumni Association.

The association’s operational funds are provided by the Ohio University Foundation, which oversees OU’s fundraising campaigns.

“I have not heard anything about the webcam in a really long time. It’s not close enough that you can tell who the people are,” said Jenny Hall-Jones, dean of students, adding that nobody has approached her with privacy concerns.

OU is not legally obliged to tell anyone they are on the camera, Hall-Jones said.

“Honestly, I didn’t know it was there, but yeah it’s a little weird,” said Jacob Freeder, a junior studying business.

The webcam is located in Cutler Hall and faces College Green and the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. The camera’s live stream can be accessed on OU’s main website and the alumni association’s website.
