While the Black Alumni Reunion will offer the chance for alumni and students to catch up and celebrate, it will also be a chance to laugh.
The Black Alumni Reunion Comedy Show will be held Friday night in the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. The event is presented by the Multicultural Programs, the Black Student Cultural Programming Board, the Campus Involvement Center and the Performing Arts Series and is sponsored by Nationwide Insurance.
Winsome Chunnu-Brayda, associate director for the Multicultural Center, spearheaded the effort behind the event. Chunnu-Brayda said the comedy show was chosen as an activity for the reunion after speaking to alumni about what they would like to see.
“We planned various events for this weekend and we asked the alumni what they would like and so many said a comedy show,” Chunnu-Brayda said.
The show is already in for a great turnout, with more than 200 tickets already sold, she said. The event will open up with stand-up from Jerry Valentine, a senior studying exercise physiology.
Valentine said he recently found the courage to perform onstage and is looking forward to showing his talents at the event.
“It was something I always wanted to do, but I was very low key and wasn’t comfortable up on stage,” Valentine said. “My friends always told me that I was funny and encouraged me to do a show in April.”
The event will also feature performances by stand-up comedians Nema Williams, who appeared on Cedric the Entertainer’s Starting Line-up and Malik S, who has performed on BET, NBC and HBO.
Chunnu-Brayda said she hopes that the event will be boast a successful turnout and be a good time for all who attend.
“I hope that the students come out and support,” Chunnu-Brayda said. “The comedians are very excited to give them this great show.”
