Construction under Park Place affects traffic flow

Tunnels under Park Place were originally thought to have been from the mid-1940s, but a routine inspection showed the tunnels lacked a construction date and might soon begin functioning improperly.

“The tunnel structure, both the concrete tunnel top and the brick wall structure, exhibited signs of structural failure in the near future,” said Harry Wyatt, associate vice president for Facilities Management.

The structure is still intact and the utility lines in the tunnels weren’t affected. The tunnels are checked periodically to prevent potential damage.

The project doesn’t have a timeline for completion; the cost of this renovation is $390,000.

Westbound traffic on Park Place has been closed during the repairs.
