Athens will get a blast from the past this Parents Weekend as Michael “DJ Barticus” Bart is going to bring ’80s night to Casa Nueva and ’90s night to Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery.
“I want people to take a chance, get out of their comfort zones, turn off their phone and make some new friends on the dance floor,” Bart said. “I want people to forget that they are at a bar and just feel the music.”
Joining Barticus on Saturday at Jackie O’s will be Dream Beaver, aka Logan Sheldon, a 2011 Ohio University alum, who will be providing a visual presentation.
“(Expect) a fun experience first and foremost because that is why both myself and Michael do this work,” Sheldon said. “It’s also a good weekend to do it as it’s parents weekend and so all the ’90s kids will be able to bring their parents and reminisce about their childhoods.”
Above all, the artists said they hope to bring everyone a nostalgic time with parents and friends.
“We hope our customers get a nostalgic look back into the ’90s,” said Evan Reed, booking manager for Jackie O’s. “The music these kids grew up with and music their parents said they ‘hated,’ but we know that’s not the case.”
As far as what people should expect, Barticus said to prepare for a flashback.
“Expect lots of people dressed up in ’80s or ’90s (costumes) — you can’t go wrong with neon — (and) expect to hear your favorite songs mixed seamlessly with songs that you used to think you didn’t like,” said Barticus. “Plan on showing up at 10 because you won’t want to miss a bit of DJ Barticus’ Epic four-hour sets on Friday or Saturday.”
If you’re not able to make it to ’80s or ’90s nights this weekend, Barticus is going to bring back ’90s night on Oct. 11 to The Union while ’80s night will be at Casa Nueva on Oct. 25.
“Expect to see your parents’ bad dance moves as they sample our many delicious beers,” Reed said. “All with higher alcohol than your parents’ old ‘near beer.’”
