Field Hockey: 'Cats lead in shots and saves, but not in score

Through the first half of Ohio’s game against Indiana on Saturday, the Bobcats held an advantage in every category except for the score, as the Hoosiers possessed a 1-0 lead, despite the Bobcats leading in shots, corners and saves.

Ohio (2-5), which has still yet to win a game that is not on a neutral field, lost the contest 3-0, though the final score was not indicative of the Bobcats’ efforts.

“I thought Indiana did a nice jobof adapting in the second half of what we’d been doing,” coach Neil Macmillan said. “We played a superb first half but came away empty handed.”

But during the second half, the Hoosiers came out firing and outshot Ohio 10-3 for the remainder of the contest.

Indiana scored a goal from junior Audra Heilman in the 41st minute to make the score 2-0, before sophomore Sydney Supica scored and gave Indiana a 3-0 lead in the 58th minute.

However, the Bobcats finally found their way on the board with senior Jessica Jue’s goal in the 63rd minute.

Indiana also held the Bobcats’ points leader, senior Luli Gomez Teruel, under wraps, as she finished the game with nothing more on the score sheet other than her 56 minutes played.

But other Bobcats helped alleviate her production absence, as juniors Kristine Gegas and Ashley Cureton registered three shots, while sophomore Adele Sammons added two, and a trio of other Bobcats each attempted one shot.

After splitting with Cal and No. 13 Northwestern two weekends ago, the Bobcats continued to play solid defense against the Hoosiers.

Ohio held Indiana under its averages for shots and goals per game. The Bobcats, however, were overwhelmed during the second half, though reigning Mid-American Conference defensive player of the week Brittany Walker did all she could to keep the Bobcats in the game by saving six shots, three of which came during each half.

The Bobcats will hit the road again next week. They will travel to Corapolis, Penn., to take on Towson (1-7) and Robert Morris (5-2) for their final games before MAC play begins in October.
