MAC Notebook: Teams experience woes during opening weekend

By Charlie Hatch

On Monday morning, each of the 13 head coaches of the Mid-American Conference were on conference call to recap the opening weekend of conference play.

For the Bobcats, if you could write a script to describe the worst possible start to a season, Sunday’s 49-7 loss to No. 9 Louisville was something along those lines.

Ohio coach Frank Solich said that Sunday was a long afternoon after Teddy Bridgewater and the Cardinals trounced the Bobcats on ESPN to begin the 2013 campaign.

“It’s clear we played an excellent football team,” Solich said during his conference call.

Redshirt senior quarterback Tyler Tettleton finished 11-23 for a mere 140 yards and no touchdowns, while redshirt senior Beau Blankenship opened up the season with just 22 yards on 12 carries.

Kent State also witnessed one of its playmakers begin the year with a rocky start. Dri Archer, a senior running back and Heisman-hopeful, left the Golden Flashes’ game against Liberty on Thursday before halftime with an ankle injury.

Kent State coach Paul Haynes said that his star player would be considered day-to-day for Saturday’s game against MAC East rival Bowling Green.

The game will be the first between a pair of MAC teams this season.

“The best player on that field was Khalil Mack,” Quinn said.

Mack finished Saturday’s contest with nine and a half tackles, two and a half of which were sacks on potential Heisman candidate Braxton Miller. The senior also intercepted a Miller pass attempt, before running it back 45 yards for a Buffalo touchdown.

The Cleveland Browns signed Bobcat alum Julian Posey to their practice squad on Monday after the Miami Dolphins waived the defensive back.

While at Ohio, Posey recorded four interceptions throughout his career. Posey was also a kick returner, and averaged 22.4 yards per return.
