Notebook: MAC filled with shootouts and blowouts in Week 3

Another week came and went with colorful storylines of near-upsets and embarrassing defeats throughout the Mid-American Conference

ZIPS almost hop out of ‘Big House’ with upset

Perhaps the most surprising news to come out of the weekend was from Akron, which almost upset now-No. 15 Michigan, losing 28-24.

“We’re all getting pats on the backs like we won the biggest game in Akron history,” said coach Terry Bowden. “We lost.”

Sophomore quarterback Kyle Pohl was named the MAC East offensive player of the week following his 25-of-49 performance, in which he garnered 311 yards and two touchdowns

“There’s a great deal of confidence… We just need to make sure we’re ready for the next (game) against Louisiana-Lafayette,” Bowden said.

Bulls survive scare from Stony Brook

After starting the season with losses to Ohio State and Baylor, Buffalo endured a five-overtime thriller against Stony Brook, which resulted in a 26-23 victory for the Bulls.

“We had a tremendous crowd and the best atmosphere I’ve ever seen (at Buffalo),” said coach Jeff Quinn. “It was a great experience win and a well-deserved, hard-fought win.”

Sophomore running back Anthone Taylor led the Bulls with 118 yards on 24 carries for two touchdowns.

From Death Valley to Happy Valley

Kent State was blown out 45-13 against Louisiana State on Saturday and will travel to University Park, Penn., to match up with a Penn State squad that lost to Central Florida last weekend.

“We go from ‘Death Valley’ to ‘Happy Valley’, and it isn’t too happy right now,” said Kent State coach Paul Haynes.

Heading into the season, Kent State senior running back Dri Archer was a potential Heisman Trophy candidate. But after suffering an ankle injury in the Golden Flashes’ first game, Archer’s status for this Saturday will once again be “doubtful,” said Haynes.

Huskies Sack Vandals

Northern Illinois defeated Idaho 45-35 in the Vandals’ Kibbie Dome over the weekend. The Huskies finished the contest with 11 sacks, a school record.

Northern Illinois coach Ron Carey credited his defensive line with a stellar performance.

“It’s nothing I did,” he said. “I wasn’t a part of the sacks. I didn’t rush the quarterback.”

Redshirt senior quarterback Jordan Lynch went 17-of-29 for 152 yards and three touchdowns through the air and picked up another two rushing tallies on the ground. He carried 23 times for 159 yards against the Vandals.
