Rainy day not enough to keep parents away

Parents Weekend kicked off in Baker University Center Ballroom on Friday night, where students and their parents could attend a murder mystery themed “dinner theater.”

For $15 a person, live performances and dinner were offered.

“It was interesting,” said Mitchell Burnette, a freshman studying pre-business, “It was nice having bonding time with my parents.”

Saturday’s rainy weather didn’t deter some families from taking in the local sites.

OU’s Outdoor Pursuits organized and led a hike to Hocking Hills State Park where participants put up some festive decorations and had a scenic trailside lunch.

Participants paid $18 each to visit locations including Old Man’s Cave and Ash Cave.

“Despite the rain, everyone got to see beautiful sites,” said John Cox, a sophomore studying outdoor recreation and education.

OU’s Program Council made sure that parents and students started their day off right on Saturday by organizing a breakfast in Baker’s ballroom. Live music and raffles were offered, and tickets were $12 per person.

“I wasn’t looking forward to waking up early, but it turned out to be a really nice and relaxing breakfast with my parents,” said Tara Joyce, a freshman studying photojournalism.

During the event, students and their parents were also able to chat with OU administrators.

The Second City, a touring comedy group hailing from Chicago, performed for an OU Parents Weekend crowd for the third consecutive year.

The comedy quintet lit up Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium with its famous brand of sketch comedy, which has produced such greats as Bill Murray and Tina Fey.

Dressed in all black (a Second City tradition), the group invoked some serious sidesplitting in the auditorium with its quick wit.

Prints from the Permanent Collection Selected by Donald Roberts were also on display at the Kennedy Museum of Art throughout the weekend. The exhibition runs until Jan. 5 and features the works of several different artists.
