University asks students, faculty to power off

Unplug your laptops, power down iPhones and don’t print.

Ohio University needs to save power — and make money.

Stephen Golding, OU’s vice president for Finance and Administration, sent out a campus-wide email Wednesday afternoon asking OU’s campus to reduce power from 1:45 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

This will result in warmer temperatures at offices and general public areas as Facilities Management adjusts air conditioning across campus, Golding said.

“Ohio University has enrolled in a Demand Response program with Energy Connect, a nationwide company that will pay the University for the ability to reduce power during the summer,” Golding said, in the email. “When an actual emergency reduction is needed, it will be based on southern Ohio regional challenges that could require a reduction in usage for several hours.”

Southeast Ohio’s electrical grid is now in a state of emergency, Golding said.

OU has had this relationship with Energy Connect for three years in which the company pays the university each year if OU can prove it can reduce its power consumption in an emergency, according to a previous Post article.

If OU meets the reduction, the university stands to gain more than $47,000, Golding said.

The campus should return to normal functioning this evening after 8 p.m.
