Women's Golf: 'Cats begin year, look ahead to future season

By: Meghan Noga

Entering her fifth year at the helm of the Ohio women’s golf team, Kelly Ovington is excited for the 2013 season, as she hopes to win a tournament, with the strength and talent of her Bobcat squad.

The roster consists of two seniors, Kara Brinkman and Kristen Helmsdoerfer, as well as Julie Lechner, a junior, Angela Codina and Lauren McKinzie, who are sophomores.

Three freshman are also on the roster in Katy Ho, Hailey Hrynewich, and Jessica McRae.

The women worked throughout the summer to ensure a successful fall and spring season.

Last Friday, the Bobcats traveled to Normal, Ill. to compete in the annual Redbird Invitational.

The tournament, which consisted of 13 other teams, was the first of the 2013-2014 season for the Bobcats.

The team participated in a practice round on Saturday and played 36 holes on Sunday, to prepare the Bobcats for another 18 holes of play on Monday.

Ovington said both rounds on Saturday were competitive and good, so tomorrow should be just as pleasing.

At the end of play on Sunday, Ohio placed 7th, which is within the Bobcats’ personal goal of being placed among the top eight teams.

The next tournament, the Nittany Lion Invitational, will be played at Penn State, as the event will run from Sept. 27-29.

Ohio’s goals for this tournament are simple, yet strong: stay focused, don’t worry about what can’t be controlled, have a speedy rebound after a bad shot, and have fun.

Ovington said they all hope to bring down their stroke averages, and improve their overall stats by then end of the spring season.

Because the Bobcats will not play a home event this year, the benefit of a home team advantage will not present itself, but Ovington believes not having that advantage doesn’t cause injury to the team, as the women will improve and reach their personal goals regardless.
