Ohio University’s Student Alumni Board collected more cans than ever before during this year’s Homecoming Weekend. The Student Alumni Board placed collection boxes in residence halls and uptown businesses for the annual canned food drive. All 2,982 cans were donated to the Athens Food Pantry.
Last school year roughly 2,000 cans of food were donated.
“It’s important to show students that we are in this larger community and we can help those outside of the university and campus,” said Student Alumni Board President Jackson Lavelle.
The Athens Food Pantry picks up the food and distributes it as they would any other donation.
Uptown businesses were encouraged to hang window displays showing their pride and promoting alumni weekend.
“I think this a great cause to contribute to anytime of the year,” said Rachel Sharkey, vice president of philanthropy for the Student Alumni Board.
“Especially considering Athens is an underprivileged area. ... It is our duty to give back to the place that has given so much to us.”
