Costumed 5K raises money for cystic fibrosis

Whether you’re a runner, a jogger or a speed walker, get ready to “run like Hell.”

Participants can dress up in a horrifying costume, a wacky costume or an adorable costume and take part in the second annual 5K to be held right in the streets of Athens.

Participants in the Run Like Hell 5K can have fun and save lives, as all the money raised from registration goes to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

“The money goes to a great cause; my daughter has the chronic illness cystic fibrosis,” said Kathy Straley, coordinator of the event. “We watched how well this event grew in Cincinnati for 20 years and we liked Halloween, and we knew that Halloween was a big thing in Athens so we thought it would be a success.”

Cystic fibrosis is a chronic disease that affects the lungs and the digestive system. The life expectancy of those diagnosed is 40 years.

Some motivation to finish the race, aside from the monster and zombie-themed aspect, is the after party at the end of it.

“There will be three bands at Casa Nueva, including Colleen Carow and Jeff Redefer of Broken Ring, The Summoners with Liz Pahl, Leah Nairn, Matt Box and Bryan Gibson and also  Skatoo,” Straley said. “Elevator Brewery (161 N. High St., Columbus) made a special Run Like Hell drink to serve.”

Though Straley won’t be running in this event, her husband, Daryn Straley, will be.

“It’s fun to run with your buddies and see all of the wacky costumes,” Daryn said. “It’s for a valuable service and I really enjoy it.”

Registration starts at the intramural fields at the end of Mill Street at 7:30 p.m. and runs in a loop back to the fields. An afterparty will be held at Casa Nueva at 9:30 p.m. Pre-registration can be found on the group’s Facebook page “Run Like Hell Costume 5K.”

Kathy Straley said in an email, “This race combines exercise, costumes, music and saving lives.”
