Halloween came a little early for participants in the Run like Hell race Saturday night.
About 100 runners travelled to the intramural fields, some dressed in their Halloween costumes to run a 5k for cystic fibrosis.
Brian Metz, a graduate student studying sports administration said it was an event where “you don’t have to take yourself seriously.”
Metz and his friends dressed as hockey players.
“I thought it might be fun and you don’t get to dress up every day, unless you count your school [cross country] uniform as a costume,” said John Oehler who dressed as Iron Man.
An after party at Casa Nueva featuring music from Colleen Carow and Jeff Redefer of Broken Ring, The Summoners and Skatoo.
Run organizer Kathy Straley began the event last year to raise money for cystic fibrosis research.
About 30,000 people in the United States and about 70,000 worldwide are living with cystic fibrosis, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, including Straley’s daughter Lilly. Lilly was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when she was just six months old and would have died only a month later if it were not for cystic fibrosis research.
But because of the progress made with the research, Straley said “Lilly is an active fifth grader.”
Run Like Hell raised about $8,000 this year — nearly 35 percent more than they made last year.
A portion of the money came from the registration fee, but most of it came from donations from local businesses and families.
