Ohio’s run through the non-conference gauntlet is now over.
Through their first 10 games, the Bobcats faced three ranked opponents and six teams with winning records. However, Ohio now sits with a 3-7 record after losing to Ohio State 2-1 on Sunday.
“We didn’t represent ourselves like we needed to,” coach Neil Macmillan said. We played pretty well at times but not consistently. We need to be better if we want to be competitive against a team like Ohio State.”
Ohio State (4-7) sophomore Annie VonderBrink started the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 19th minute. Just one minute and a half passed before Bobcat senior Jessica Jue responded with her fifth goal in six games to even out the contest at one.
“Jessica again took advantage of a number of great opportunities for us,” Macmillan said. “She had a really skilled goal on a reverse stick backing it in — she did a great job pressing on the forward line and into the Ohio State zone.”
However, before the end of the 23rd minute, the Buckeyes regained the lead, thanks to senior Mona Frommhold’s goal.
The remaining 47 minutes then passed without a goal, as Ohio’s senior goalkeeper Brittany Walker kept the Bobcats within striking distance by recording five second-half saves.
Senior Luli Gomez Teruel, sophomore Adele Sammons and freshman Franziska Schmiedel each took two shots in an attempt to add another point on the scoreboard for the Bobcats.
“We were a bit unfortunate with the goals we let in,” Macmillan said. “The rest of the time we did a good job of restricting them in the offensive zone.”
The Bobcats will now move forward from their non-conference schedule onto MAC play.
Ohio will begin their conference schedule with a road game on Friday at Missouri State, which will enter the game with a 2-8 record, having already lost a MAC game to Kent State.
