Manslaughter victim's mother granted son's personal belongings

Patricia Hoy, a grief-stricken mother, was granted the property belonging to her son, the victim of a convicted assailant, by the Athens County Common Pleas Court Wednesday.

The items were “evidence selected by Sheriff’s office during investigation,” said Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn, but court documents did not specify what the belongings are.

Harley Aaron Pruitt, of Chauncey, was 20 when he became involved in a fistfight with Gary Wooten, now 22, and was beaten unconscious. Pruitt was taken to O’Bleness Memorial Hospital and later transferred by life flight to Grant Hospital in Columbus, according to court documents.

He died at 1:45 p.m. May 4, 2012 in Grant Hospital, according to a previous Post article.

Wooten, of Glouster, was charged with felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and two counts of involuntary manslaughter, first-degree felonies.

On April 4, he also pleaded guilty to a 2012 robbery.

Wooten was sentenced to four years in prison. He was originally incarcerated in the Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail and was transferred to the Ross Correctional Institution in Chillicothe to complete his sentence. No early release is expected, according to court documents.

He was also ordered to pay $1,300 to the victim’s family and $4,934.54 in restitution.
