Pre-Law day to highlight careers, role of Supreme Court

Ohio University Honors Tutorial College will sponsor Pre-Law Day 2013, an event that will feature a series of panels from 10 law professionals, most of whom are OU alumni.

The event will be held Friday in Baker University Center. It is free and open to the public, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. in front of the Baker Center Theater.

“Students will be exposed to the variety of careers that are possible with a law degree and have a better understanding about how to get into the field and enjoy success,” said Laura Schaeffer, event organizer.

Anna Harvey will deliver the keynote address: “Should Judges Make Law?” The presentation will delve into the issue of whether the Supreme Court, as unelected officials, should make laws for the nation.

Harvey is an associate professor and former chair of the Department of Politics at New York University. She’s also an OU 1988 alumna.

“Anna Harvey is a dynamic speaker whose work on the Supreme Court will kick off the day by offering us a sense of why the law and its interpretation matters to every single one of us every day,” said Jeremy Webster, dean of OU Honors Tutorial College.

Following Harvey’s keynote, eight panels will cover several areas in the law industry, including how to apply to law school and women in the field of law.

This is the first year that the Honors Tutorial College has hosted the event. The last Pre-Law Day took place in 2010 and was sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences.

The panelists represent a wide variety of professions within the law field. Some of them work in the private sector at law firms, while corporations like BP and the Department of Justice have employed others.

The application process to law school, career paths and balance of a work-life relationship as a law professional will all be discussed throughout the day.
