Puttsapalooza provides Athens residents chance to score hole-in-one for charities

Most people would consider miniature golf a simple way to spend time with friends, but one organization is taking miniature golf to the next level.

With teams of two to four people, Puttsapalooza allows the Athens community to continue giving back to Putt People First, which benefits organizations such as HAVAR and Athens Area Mediation Services (AAMS).

“We expect a lot more people, more food and some live music,” said John Schmieding, the director of AAMS.

The event, which began last year, will feature food from O’Betty’s Red Hot, Kiser’s BBQ and Donkey Coffee & Espresso, and will also feature sno-cones, golf cart rides and prizes for kids. Prizes will be given by Brenen’s, Salaam, Donkey Coffee, Universitees, Habibi’s, Court Street Coffee and will also include cash prizes.

“Mostly, I hope people have fun,” said Debbie Schmieding, executive director of HAVAR. “I hope people also learn more about our cause and are able to help out, but the main goal of this event is for people to get together and enjoy themselves.”

As of Tuesday, there were 20 groups of four signed up. Schmieding said he expects to get more as the event draws closer.

"We have had great fun over the last few years, knowing that we've successfully combined a highly collaborative fundraiser with unique entertainment for the Athens community, Schmieding said. "Our spring opening event drew about 90 people; we hope to exceed that."

In addition to all the festivities, the organization will also showcase a “new and flashy element at hole #11,” Schmieding said.

HAVAR, founded in 1972, hopes to “connect people, with our without disabilities, in supportive and inclusive communities.”

Teams are able to register at havar.org.  Tickets for two-player teams are $50 and teams of four are $100. Teams of students or families are half price.  People are also able to register as individuals.

“More participation means more fun and, important to us, more visibility and appreciation for the role of our sponsors,” Schmieding said.
