RiffTrax brings comedy to horror classic at Athena Grand

Horror fans have probably already experienced the George A. Romero classic

Night of the Living Dead

several times by now. But they haven’t been able to experience it with the accompaniment of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 gang, until now.

The Athena Grand, 1008 E. State St., is bringing RiffTrax, formerly known as Mystery Science Theater 3000, stars Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett together for another live show providing satirical commentary over the movie.

“An evening at the movie theater with RiffTrax live is always a hilarious and fun experience,” said Shelly Maxwell, executive vice president of the distributor NCM Fathom, in an email. “Seeing the guys fire their wisecracking commentary at

Night of the Living Dead

on the big screen is a must-see for everyone’s Halloween to-do list.”

While there have been quite a few RiffTrax events in the past at the Athena Grand, with various degrees of success, Frame believes that this film’s notoriety, along with the holiday season, should be one of their more successful RiffTrax screenings.

“We’re expecting a bigger crowd for this one, giving that it is

Night of the Living Dead,”

said Rick Frame, manager of the Athena Grand.

While the screening is not rated, audience members should treat it as an R-rating. Following this screening, there will be another RiffTrax live event at the Athena Grand on Dec. 5, when they parody

Santa Claus Conquers the Martins.

“Fans can expect all of the same hysterics from the RiffTrax guys for

Night of the Living Dead,

” said Leslie Obletz, public relations specialist for NCM Fathom.

The guys have been working around the clock to provide all-new riff’s for the zombie film. However, since they will be broadcasting live, you never know what surprises will be in store.”

Fans of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 folks should expect the same comedy experience they have garnered before, only this time with the added benefit of watching it with a crowd and in a theater. If you’re not familiar with Mystery Science Theater 3000 or RiffTrax, you should go into this movie expecting one thing.

“Laughs, laughs and more laughs,” Obletz said. “You’ve probably seen the film, now experience it the RiffTrax way with their wisecracking commentary that is sure to bring tears to your eyes.”
